Post-graduation field trips provide Bronchos firsthand glimpse of career paths, jobs of the future

Visits to skilled trades, other job sites part of district’s commitment to introducing students to diverse career options

HOLLY, Mich. Holly High School students regularly receive a firsthand glimpse of diverse career paths and the jobs of the future through field trips to job sites spanning a wide range of industries and fields, including those in the skilled trades.

So far this school year, students have learned about potential career options during tours of skilled trades sites, colleges and universities and more as part of the district’s commitment to preparing all Bronchos for success after graduation.

“These outside-the-classroom experiences introduce our Bronchos to a wide range of diverse career paths, including in the skilled trades, as they begin to plan the next phases of their lives,” said Jennifer Fettig, the district’s director of career programming and business partnerships. “Our field trips are part of our ongoing commitment to providing an up-close-and-personal view of in-demand careers and other post-graduation options.”

This year’s field trips kicked off Oct. 4 with about 20 of the district’s construction trades, marketing and Broncho Virtual Program students touring Shannon Precision Fastener in Holly. Students learned about the manufacturing and production industries as employees demonstrated their roles at the facility. Students heard a presentation from company CEO Ed Lumm — a Holly High School graduate — who shared his success story. An Oakland Community College representative was on hand to discuss the school’s manufacturing and trades programs.

More than 275 Broncho students and parents participated in College Night and Professional Trades and Apprenticeship Night Oct. 16 at Holly High School. The event hosted more than 70 exhibitors from colleges, trade schools, the military and Michigan businesses. The event also hosted a College 101 session providing valuable college planning resources. Also during the event, Holly High School Career and Technical Education teachers hosted their annual advisory committees with business and college representatives, students, teachers and parents to discuss current job market demand.

Holly High School’s DECA Team members attended Michigan State University Leadership Day in November and a Sports Marketing Conference at Little Caesars Arena in December. At MSU, students participated in business activities related to accounting, sales, investment banking, entrepreneurship, the automotive industry and more. At the Detroit conference, the DECA students participated in discussions with representatives of the Detroit Pistons organization, including marketing operations executives, sales directors, digital marketing specialists, and retail sales directors. Students enjoyed a Detroit Pistons game following the event.

“These opportunities to interact with experts in the various business fields are invaluable to our DECA students and all Bronchos,” said David Golec, Holly High School marketing teacher. “Each of our students left these events with new insights into what it takes to succeed in these industries.”

Additional post-graduation field trips have included:

  • Oct. 15: 38 Bronchos attended an educational and interactive field trip to Clarkston Family Farm. The purpose of the trip was to enhance understanding of nutrition, agriculture and potential careers in those fields.
  • Nov. 11: 24 Holly High School juniors and seniors participated in tours of Mott Community College and the University of Michigan-Flint campus. At Mott Community College, students attended a presentation about the college’s academic programs. At UM-Flint, students were given a full campus tour including the engineering building, recreation center, dorm rooms and Union Hall.

  • Nov. 19: 35 Holly High School and Broncho Virtual Program students attended MiCareer Quest at the Novi Suburban Showplace. The event hosted representatives from more than 200 careers in health sciences, technology, construction trades and advanced manufacturing.

“These field trips demonstrate our district’s commitment to providing our students with real-world opportunities to learn about the good-paying jobs of both today and tomorrow,” said Scott Roper, Holly Area Schools superintendent. “I want to thank these amazing businesses, organizations and colleges for opening their doors and our outstanding staff for their  dedication to preparing our Bronchos for success and careers.”
